The
International Istanbul Film Festival, organized by the Istanbul
Foundation for Culture and Arts celebrates its 23rd anniversary
this year. Every year through its history, having successfully channeled
most prominent new works of the Seventh Art to cinema-lovers, as well
as serving as a cinematheque, the Festival presents an inspiring program
that comprises 200 films from all over the world, all meticoulously selected.
The Festival Program builds up a rich collection which not only embraces
newly produced works that have proved themselves noteworthy, received
much praise and prestigious awards at prominent festivals last year, but
also encompasses unforgettable cinema classics as well as a myriad
of films by the masters of the Seventh Art. This collection which
is brought together from cinemas of 62 countries is not limited
to any particular geography, era or length of footage. Furthermore, it
is enhanced with stimulating documentaries and creative new works of the
Animation Cinema.
TURKCELL Communications Ltd. has, for the sixth time taken
on the Festival Sponsorship of the International Istanbul Film
Festival.
The poster of this year’s Festival has been designed by Young &
Rubicam / Reklamevi.
The screenings will take place at EMEK, ATLAS, SNEPOP, BEYOLU
and ATLAS 2 (a new place to open its doors to the Festival) movie
theatres in Beyolu, and REXX Movie Theatre in Kadky. The screening
times are: 11:00 – 13:30 – 16:00 – 19.00 and 21:30.
All 6 intriguing films in the “Midnight Screenings”
section will be presented to the cinema-lovers throughout the Festival
at ATLAS Movie Theatre on Saturday nights in 3 separate shows
of 2 films each starting at 24:00.

GRETA GARBO TO DRACULA: SPECIAL SCREENINGS
The traditional silent films with live music will meet with the cinema-lovers
two times this year. The “Special Screenings” section will feature Greta
Garbo’s memorable silent film, “A Woman of Affairs” accompanied
by the music of Borusan Chamber Orchestra at Cemal Reit Rey Concert Hall
on April 13th, Tuesday at 21:30, andone of the masterpieces
of silent film, F.W. Murnau’s 1921 classic “Nosferatu”. “Nosferatu”
will be screened accompanied by the music of German piano player, Eunice
Martins, at Cemal Reit Rey Concert Hall on April 20th, Tuesday
at 21:30.
DJ MARTIN MORALES PRESENTS: ESSENTIAL LATIN FLAVAS
This
year, the Festival is coming with an outstanding and memorable selection
of 19 films from 10 distinct countries in the “Latin American Cinema”
Section. To top all that, on the night of April 21st, Wednesday,
be prepared for DJ Martin Morales presents: Essential
Latin Flavas. The party will take place at Markiz Buzhol and
start at 22:00. The well-known British latin music DJ, Martin Morales
will play that night while Basil Isaacs, the famous percussionist
of Black II Basics, will heat the night with his rhythm and two dancers
with their performances. Tickets will be on sale through Biletix
as from March 27th. Ticket prices are 20 million
TL (excluding services) and 25 million TL at the entrance.
BLUES CONCERT
To
underline the “Martin Scorsese Presents: Blues” section
that will come with 7 films as one of the most striking features of this
year’s festival, Babylon will host a night of Blues on April
18th, Sunday at 21:00. A great name from the world of the
Blues, Big Jack Johnson will give a memorable concert together
with his band. Tickets for this concert will be on sale through Biletix
as from March 27th. Ticket prices are 20 million
TL (excluding services) and 25 million TL at the entrance.
The exhibition of “Film Posters from an Island (1960 – 2000)”
will be open from April 10th to 25th at Kar
Art Gallery in Elhamra Han at Beyolu. The curator of the exhibition
is Sara Vega who is the Director of the Cuban Cinema Institution
(ICAIC). 75 Cuban film posters of truly striking design will be on display
at this exhibition.
